You are likely to experience a range of emotions after diagnosis and during your treatment, recovery and life after cancer.

It is important to recognise these feelings and seek help. We work with specialist mental health counsellors who will help you identify the roots of your emotions, manage the grief that arises from your cancer diagnosis and treatment, and cope with the challenges that will be presented in this fight. Our goal is to heal the person, not just the disease.

Benefits of psycho-oncology

  • Improves the psychological and emotional coping skills to manage the side effects of treatment.

  • Treats anxiety disorders (phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, mood disorders, depression and substance abuse) that may occur as a result of diagnosis and/or treatment.

  • Provides emotional support, education and awareness to the patient's family and immediate environment.

  • Reduces disturbing thoughts, painful memories and other types of psychological symptoms that interfere with the daily life of the patients and their family members.

  • Prevents post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by reframing negative expectations about cancer diagnosis and treatment planning.

  • Develops emotional resilience and increased self-esteem - helps manage feelings of loneliness and powerlessness by connecting with other patients.

  • Handles the psychological adverse effects associated with the treatment (pain, nausea, hair loss, fatigue and weight gain/loss).

  • Strengthens your physical condition by setting up strategies to reduce stress.

  • Offers integrated support in collaboration with other specialties involved in cancer care (surgery, pharmacology, nursing and physiotherapy).

  • Establishes a framework for self-care and tackling unhealthy habits by helping you to quit smoking, drinking alcohol and other behaviors detrimental to your health.
